The events that led Microblogging site Twitter to Crash

Twitter, the micro-blogging social networking website that provides information about almost everything imaginable in this universe has been growing it’s database ever since it started. The user list jumped from around 400000 in February 2008 to 7 million in February 2009 which shows the great following this website holds.

But this huge networking website has also seen it’s bad days where it has not been able to withstand the great “traffic” pressure. There have been several events in the past where the site just crashed due to sheer enormity of the user traffic.

1. Death of Michael Jackson – As soon as the news hit the internet that Michael Jackson had been suffering from cardiac problem that led to his death, the internet community logged in to the post tweets and to get updated in it’s greatest strength which eventually led the whole web left alone twitter to become dysfunctional for sometime.

2. The return of Apple’s Steve Jobs – On September 9, 2009 , the day that marked the return of Steve Jobs as the CEO of Apple and uncovering of I-POD nano and I-TUNES 9, the twitter crashed just because Jobs said the word “twitter” in his speech.

3. US 1549 Pics Upload – On Jan. 15, 2009, Janis Krums happened to be on a ferry that helped save the passengers of US Airways Flight 1549 after it crashed into the Hudson River. He clicked some of the pictures of the wreck, and uploaded it to Twitter. Soon after,  all the new traffic brought by Krums’ image quickly crashed the service.

4. Barbara Walters – A well known TV host of the morning show “The View” crashed twitter while she she explained about twitter to her audience. She was not even registered to twitter.

5. Oprah Winfrey Effect – On April, 2009 as soon as Winfrey registered to twitter, 37% new users registered to twitter. The users saw several flaws and lags throughout that month using this service.

6. Too much Jabber – On may 23, 2008 the twitter had to be shutdown for few minutes due some Jabber activity error which is open source XML – based highly programmable instant messaging service. The twitter people had issued the following as an apology for the breakdown.

” We found an errant API project eating way too much of our Jabber (a flavor of instant messenger) resources. This activity (which we’ve corrected) had an affect of overloading our main database, resulting in the error pages and slowness most people are now encountering.

We’re bringing services back online now. Some will be slower than others for a while, and we’ll be watching IM and IM-based API clients very closely. We’ll also be taking steps to avoid this behavior in the future. Thanks for your patience! “

One more “Metal band Accept” crash happened on May 11, 2010. The Turkish fan of the band Accept, after seeing new Accept video Teutonic Terror has written in twitter: Accept pwns. And instead of seeing his message posted, he found that user @pwns started to follow him. This way he inadvertently found a way to force following – that scared celebrities. All the follower counts were reset to zero.
